The Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) is a comprehensive source of information on federal, state, local, and utility incentives and policies that support renewable energy and energy efficiency in the United States. DSIRE is operated by the N.C. Clean Energy Technology Center at N.C. State University and is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

To find information on federal grants and incentives for solar energy, visit the DSIRE website at:

On the DSIRE website, you can search for federal incentives by selecting “Federal” in the “Jurisdiction” dropdown menu. Additionally, you can filter the results by technology (e.g., solar) to find specific incentives applicable to solar energy installations.

It is essential to keep in mind that federal incentives and grant programs may change over time, so it is recommended to verify the current availability and requirements before proceeding with an application.

Other Grants

While the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) is the most comprehensive source for information on incentives and grants for residential solar panels, there are other resources that may provide information on specific grants, incentives, or financing options. Some of these resources include:

  1. ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder:
  1. U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) – primarily for rural small businesses and agricultural producers, but in some cases, residential projects may be eligible:
  1. Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM) program – not a grant, but a financing option to help homeowners fund energy efficiency improvements, including solar panels:
  1. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Energy Efficient Mortgages for Veterans – similar to the FHA EEM program, this financing option is available for veterans and eligible service members:
  1. Local utility companies – some utility companies offer rebates or incentives for installing solar panels. Check your local utility company’s website or contact them directly to inquire about any available programs.

Remember that these resources may have specific eligibility requirements or may change over time. Always verify the current availability, requirements, and application processes before proceeding with any grant, incentive, or financing program.
